注意after和in的使用：從某時(shí)說(shuō)到多少時(shí)間以后，不用after，而用in。如果指“某個(gè)時(shí)刻，日期或事件以后”，用after。 He will/would arrive in four weeks. He will(或would)arrive after four o'clock /5 July/the ceremony.

表達(dá)“某事件的若干時(shí)間以后”時(shí)，應(yīng)是“若干時(shí)間after事件”，而不是“after若干時(shí)間of事件”。可說(shuō)two hours after his arrival，不可說(shuō)after two hours of his arrival。在“two hours after his arrival”前加不同的介詞，有不同的意思:“two hours after his arrival”單用時(shí)指“他到達(dá)兩小時(shí)以后”。若前面加the，如the two hours after his arrival指“他到達(dá)以后的兩小時(shí)”，加for指“在他到達(dá)以后的兩小時(shí)全段時(shí)間里”，加in 跟沒(méi)有in意思相同，加within指“在他到達(dá)以后的兩小時(shí)中的某時(shí)刻”；

指“若干時(shí)間after日期或月份”時(shí)，常把當(dāng)天的日期或當(dāng)月除外。如five days after 3 July，指從7月4日算起的5天以后，也就是7月9日。但有例外，five days after I July可能指7月8日，months after July可能指11月，注意避免這種結(jié)構(gòu)產(chǎn)生誤解；

指“從過(guò)去的某時(shí)或某事說(shuō)到現(xiàn)在”時(shí)，不用after，用since，所以可說(shuō)Since his graduation he has been abroad.（since不可改成after）一定要改的話(huà)，可表示為After his graduation he went abroad. 這里的after是介詞，用作連接詞時(shí)用法一樣。 He went abroad after he graduated.不可說(shuō) He has been abroad after he graduated.

half after four，five minutes after eight等是美國(guó)英語(yǔ)，相當(dāng)于英國(guó)英語(yǔ)half past four，five minutes past eight等，英國(guó)方言中也有half after four等表達(dá)方式；

after引導(dǎo)的狀語(yǔ)從句，用現(xiàn)在時(shí)態(tài)，不用將來(lái)時(shí)態(tài)。 I shall start after he comes.

after常指時(shí)間先后的次序，而behind常指位置，如August comes after July，用after,，而A garden lies behind the house，用behind。不過(guò)有時(shí)after和behind可以通用。 Please shut the door after/behind you.He came in after/behind her.

be after指“追求，要求”， He is after you.他正在追求你。 He is always after me to teach him the violin.他老是要我教他小提琴。

after all有時(shí)指“雖然這樣”， In coming home we got caught in the rain and became wet through and through, after all I don't mind as we had a fine time.

不可說(shuō)be after doing …，這里不是指想要做什么，或是將要做什么，而是已經(jīng)做了什么。但是可以用after doing…的結(jié)構(gòu)。 After completing this form, give it to the secretary.

after作為副詞時(shí)，通常不單用，而是以其他形式出現(xiàn)，如afterwards，then或after that。 I'm going to do my exams, and afterwards I'm going to study medicine.

after可用作連詞連接一個(gè)時(shí)間狀語(yǔ)從句,從句中一般用現(xiàn)在時(shí)表示將來(lái)。

after用作副詞時(shí)常與soon, ever搭配,通常用于表示時(shí)間的名詞后。

after用作副詞時(shí)不用于比較等級(jí)。

after有時(shí)還可用作形容詞,意思是“以后的,后來(lái)的”,常用作定語(yǔ)。例如:He grew weak in after years.在以后的幾年里,他身體越來(lái)越衰弱了。
