earth的基本意思是“地球”,指相對于其他天體來說,為人類生存提供條件的星體; 還可指“大地,地面,陸地”,指相對于天空而言的為人類和其他生物提供居住地的地球表面。earth還可指“泥土,土壤”。earth引申可指“全人類”; earth用于比喻還可指“大量的錢”。

earth作“地球”解時常以單數(shù)形式出現(xiàn),前加定冠詞,也可作為專有名詞,這時要用(the) Earth的形式,冠詞可有可無,而現(xiàn)在多用the earth形式,但如果和天空、天體相對時,前面常不加冠詞。

earth作“泥土,土壤”解時,是物質(zhì)名詞,泛指時不用冠詞,特指或類指時須用定冠詞。
