holiday的基本意思是“假期”,指源于宗教的“節(jié)日,假日”,也可指不用去上班、上學等的“休假日”“假期”,還可指“出外度假時期”。其單數(shù)形式指包括含一天或一次的假期,復(fù)數(shù)形式指一次以上或一天以上的假期。
holiday作“休假期”解時常用于復(fù)數(shù)形式,是英國用法。
holidays如作整體看待,可作單數(shù)處理。
有時holiday可以不包括星期日。例如:This store has no business on Sundays and holidays.這個商店在星期日及假日停止營業(yè)。
在英式英語中holiday也可用作不及物動詞,意思是“出外度假”。例如:The star is holidaying in London.該明星正在倫敦度假。We planned to holiday at the seaside.我們打算到海濱度假。
