control作名詞時(shí)，有“檢查點(diǎn)”的意思，如customs control（海關(guān)檢查）。

control的基本意思有二:一是“控制”,指被控制者對(duì)控制者意志的絕對(duì)服從,也指控制自己的情緒。二是“管理”,指用才能、權(quán)威或其他力量去管理、引導(dǎo),使之在準(zhǔn)確性、效能性、紀(jì)律性、相宜性等方面保持在所要求的范圍之內(nèi)。

control的主語(yǔ)主要是具有生命且能表達(dá)意志的人,而其賓語(yǔ)則是一切能被人所控制的人、物、事。具有某種功能的儀器裝置只能控制“物”,而不能控制人,也不能控制局勢(shì)、秩序等。

control多用作及物動(dòng)詞,后接名詞或代詞作賓語(yǔ)。control在作“控制情緒”解時(shí)，須接反身代詞作賓語(yǔ)。

control偶爾可接動(dòng)詞不定式作賓語(yǔ),意思是“盡力〔設(shè)法〕(做)…”。

control的過(guò)去式、過(guò)去分詞、現(xiàn)在分詞在英式英語(yǔ)中都要雙寫“l(fā)”,即controlled, controlled, controlling，在美式英語(yǔ)中不雙寫。

control用作名詞的意思是“控制,管理”,可指控制或管理的行為,也可指對(duì)某人或某物擁有支配、管理的權(quán)力; 還可指對(duì)某人或某物的管理方式,具體的管理手段。

control多用作不可數(shù)名詞,作“限制或管理的手段”解時(shí),可用作可數(shù)名詞,可用于復(fù)數(shù)形式。

control前即使有形容詞也不可加不定冠詞a。

control的復(fù)數(shù)形式controls有時(shí)可表示“控制系統(tǒng),控制措施”。
