joke的基本意思是“笑話,玩笑”,指引人發(fā)笑的談話或故事,也指供人當(dāng)作笑料的事情。可用作可數(shù)名詞,也可用作不可數(shù)名詞。

joke作“可笑的人、事物、情形”解時(shí),多用于單數(shù)形式,可與不定冠詞連用。

joke作動(dòng)詞時(shí)意思是“開玩笑”“取笑”,不僅指“言”,而且還指“行”,是不及物動(dòng)詞,常用于進(jìn)行體。

“和某人開玩笑”是joke with sb; “拿某事開玩笑”是joke about sth; “拿某事和某人開玩笑”是joke with sb about sth。習(xí)語You must be〔have got to be〕 joking的意思是“你一定是(在)開玩笑”。

joke偶爾還可用作及物動(dòng)詞,這時(shí)可接賓語從句。例如:The French joked that it did not matter what you ate, the taste was always the same.法國(guó)人曾開玩笑說,不論你吃什么,其味道都是一樣的。

在非正式語體中, joke能引出直接引語,作“用玩笑的口吻說道”解。例如:“We have to find people who know the smell of land.Not bureaucrats,”he jokes.他開玩笑說,“我們必須找到了解陸地情況的人,不是官僚”。
