answer(to)the letter，answer(to)the question，answer(for)the purpose等常用格式中，習(xí)慣將to或for等介詞省略掉，但是注意reply to the letter中的to不可以省略；

answer有時指“答復(fù)……的內(nèi)容”。有時，answer指“報告收到”，reply指“答復(fù)……的內(nèi)容”。 I have your letter, but as I am very busy, I cannot answer it at present.句中的主語已經(jīng)在回復(fù)信了，但還說沒有辦法answer。 I answered your letter by sending a postcard last Monday and have since been waiting for time to reply to it.

同reply比較，answer有時指“中肯的答復(fù)”。 Your reply is not an answer.你的回答不中肯。

answered有時指“把……作為答復(fù)”。 He answered her not a word.他連一個詞都沒有回復(fù)她。

answer后可接that從句或另接賓語。 He answered that he could not go.他回復(fù)說自己去不了了。 He answered me that he would not go.他回復(fù)我說他去不了了。

在商業(yè)回信的開頭，常用“In answer to your letter ...”的格式。

answer用作動詞的基本意思是“回答,答復(fù)”,可以用言語回答,也可以用文字回答,還可以用行動回答,視賓語的不同可靈活翻譯。

answer用作及物動詞時,可接人、物或that從句作賓語,也可接雙賓語(兩個賓語都是直接賓語),作“符合,滿足”解時賓語主要是need, hope, purpose等抽象名詞。

answer用作不及物動詞時主要表示“回答,負(fù)責(zé),保證,成功,奏效,適應(yīng),符合”。

answer表示用語言、文字或行動對問題進(jìn)行回答,是一最常用詞; 用于轉(zhuǎn)義表示“符合,適應(yīng)”等義時,是較正式的用法; answer to the name則是口語用法。

answer for表示“受責(zé)備”時可用于被動結(jié)構(gòu),表示“許諾,答應(yīng)別人”時也常用于被動結(jié)構(gòu),表示其他意思時均常用于一般時態(tài)。作“對…負(fù)有責(zé)任”解時,通常不用于進(jìn)行體。

“回答某人某事”應(yīng)該說answer sb sth,不能說answer sth to〔for〕 sb。但不要受下面句子的影響：They never answered a letter to me.他們從沒有給我回信。句中to me是介詞短語作letter的定語。另外需要注意下面兩個句子不是雙直賓語。No one was able to answer him a word.沒有人能答復(fù)他一句話。He answered us never a word.他從來不答復(fù)我們一個字。這兩個句子中的a word是名詞性狀語。

對問題不能回答時,不說I can't answer it.而說I can't answer your question.或I can't answer.

answer sth with sth和answer with sth中的with sth 都作方式狀語用,但前者意為“以…來回答…”。例如:I answered his threat with a blow on his nose.我向他迎鼻一擊來回敬他的恐嚇。

answer to the description作“符合描繪的情況”解時, to也可省略。例如:This car exactly answers (to) the description of the stolen car.這輛汽車和所說的那輛被盜走的特點完全相符。

answer用作可數(shù)名詞時主要表示用口頭或書面作出的“回答,答復(fù),答辯”或表示最初不知道而經(jīng)過思考之后才得出的“答案,解答”。

answer前一般須有冠詞、數(shù)詞或其他能修飾可數(shù)名詞的限定詞(語),其后可接表示“針對…的”介詞短語to sth (to不可換成表示所有關(guān)系的of或表示目的的for等介詞)。

know all the answers意為“(自以為)精通一切”。
