almost no，almost nothing和almost never都指“幾乎沒有”，屬美國英語，而英國人更習慣說scarcely/hardly any，scarcely/hardly anything和scarcely/hardly ever。不過兩國人都不說almost not，因almost不可被not修飾，可以說nearly not；

almost與nearly意思相近，不過美國人習慣用almost。有時，almost只是比nearly更近了那么“一點點”。當描述即將達到目標或者接近于某數(shù)據(jù)等時，人們更習慣于用almost去表達“接近，但不完全一樣”的意思，使得陳述的內(nèi)容沒有那么精確，明確。通常nearly不用在否定詞前，如never，nobody，nothing，any等，習慣與almost連用。 It's nearly ten o'clock. (= perhaps 9.45)It's almost ten o'clock. (= perhaps 9.57) Jake is almost like a father to me.

almost是常用的程度副詞,基本意思是“幾乎,差不多”,強調(diào)差一點,缺一點。引申還可作“實際〔質(zhì)〕上”“簡直”解。

almost可用于修飾動詞、形容詞、副詞、名詞、代詞、數(shù)詞或介詞等,有時還可用來代替全句。almost不能與not連用,但可與no, none, nobody, nothing, never等否定詞連用,表示“幾乎,差不多”。

為了避免意義含混不清或者不合邏輯, almost常常緊接在它所修飾詞之前。修飾動詞時一般置于主要動詞之前,但要放在系動詞、助動詞和情態(tài)動詞之后。almost不能置于句末。

almost可用于同級比較。

almost無比較級和最高形形式,不可加very修飾。

almost位置不同,可能引起意義的改變。試比較以下兩句： He almost wept every time he was scolded.每次受責罵時,他幾乎都要哭。(實際上他沒有哭過)He wept almost every time he was scolded.差不多每次受責罵時,他都要哭。

almost偶爾也可用作形容詞,意為“幾乎可算是…的”,在句中用作定語。例如：Cage is my almost sister.凱奇與我情同手足。Her almost smile disappeared.她臉上那一絲勉強的微笑消失了。

注意almost的翻譯：如果英語動詞(肯定式)所表達的內(nèi)容是不希望發(fā)生的事,譯為漢語時用肯定式和否定式均可,意思相同。例如He was almost drowned.可譯為“他差一點沒淹死。”也可譯為“他差一點就淹死了。”但如果英語動詞所表達的內(nèi)容是希望發(fā)生的事,則英語用肯定式,漢語也譯為肯定式,但事實卻是否定的; 反之英語用否定式,漢語也譯為否定式,但事實卻是肯定的。例如： I almost met him.我差點見到他。(其實沒見到)I almost didn't meet him.我差點沒見到他。(其實見到了)

一般說almost不和not連用,指的是不可說not almost,但almost not還是可以出現(xiàn)在否定句中的,如3.中的例句。
