event的基本意思是“事件”,可指歷史上的、國際的、國家的或社會的重大事件,也可指日常的小事件。event是可數(shù)名詞,其復數(shù)形式有時還可指“事態(tài)的發(fā)展”“時局”。
event還可作體育運動的“比賽項目”解,是可數(shù)名詞。
在美式英語中,in the event后接that從句,表示“如果”。而在英式英語中則和but連用,表示“結(jié)果”。例如: In the event that he has not been told,I will tell him.(AmE)如果還沒有人告訴他,我去告訴他。We set out for the seaside,but in the event never go there.(BrE)我們出發(fā)去海邊,但結(jié)果始終沒有到達 那兒。
