evening作“傍晚,黃昏,晚上”解時(shí),指晚飯后、下班后或者日落后到就寢前這段時(shí)間,可用作可數(shù)名詞,也可用作不可數(shù)名詞。evening還可作聯(lián)歡性、娛樂性的“晚會(huì)”解,這時(shí)是可數(shù)名詞。

一般說在晚上用介詞in,但當(dāng)evening前有修飾成分如“某日的晚上”或“星期…的晚上”時(shí)用on,但當(dāng)其前又有時(shí)間狀語時(shí), on也可換為in。evening與this, that, tomorrow, yesterday, every, all, next等限定詞連用時(shí)相當(dāng)于副詞短語,其前不用介詞。

復(fù)數(shù)形式的evenings指不斷重復(fù)的晚上,起強(qiáng)調(diào)作用。

當(dāng)表示某〔有〕一個(gè)晚上時(shí),如其前沒有定冠詞,則通常用數(shù)詞one而不用不定冠詞a(n)。

在表示“過去某一天的晚上”可用the previous evening或the evening before; 表示“過去某一天的次日晚上”可以說the following evening。
