heaven與earth(地)或hell(地獄)相對(duì),基本意思是“天國(guó),天堂”,也可指“上帝”或“老天爺”。
在文學(xué)語(yǔ)言中, heaven可以指“天空”,常用復(fù)數(shù)形式heavens,其前通常有定冠詞the,如果其前有修飾語(yǔ),也可用單數(shù)形式并加不定冠詞a; 作“天堂,天國(guó)”解時(shí),其前不加冠詞; 作“上帝,老天爺”解時(shí),首字母通常大寫,其前一般也不加冠詞; 作“極為愉快的事”解是不可數(shù)名詞,作“極為愉快的地方”解是可數(shù)名詞。
heaven有時(shí)可單獨(dú)使用或與某一修飾詞、動(dòng)詞或介詞一起使用表示感嘆、賭咒或加強(qiáng)語(yǔ)氣,前面一般不加定冠詞the,首字母可大寫,也可不大寫。
