tolerate的基本意思是“容許”“忍受”“容忍”,主要指克制自己而容忍厭惡或反對的事情,其原因可以是由于冷漠或不在乎,也可以是出于和睦的愿望而“寬恕”那些難堪的人、物或行為。在程度上可指沒有任何反抗,也可指帶有強烈痛苦。

tolerate在口語中有時還可作“不與(某人)一般見識”“讓著某人”解。

tolerate是及物動詞,可接名詞、代詞或動名詞作賓語。

tolerate后可接動名詞,但一般不能接動詞不定式。例如: 我將不能忍受他抽煙。誤:I will not tolerate him to smoke.正:I will not tolerate him smoking.
