chicken還可作動詞解,常與out連用,意思是“因害怕而打退堂鼓”。例如:I used to ski but I've chickened out.我過去滑雪,但現(xiàn)在打退堂鼓了。John was courageous and manly when others chickened out.當(dāng)別人都害怕打退堂鼓了,可約翰卻是勇氣十足的,有個男子漢氣魄。
