accident單用時指“偶然”，而沒有“不幸”的意思。 She was twenty when accident brought her to the notice of the great author.

by accident意為“偶然地”，反義表達方式是by design或on purpose；

表達“某人某物遭遇不幸事件”時，加to在人或物前。 There was an accident to the little boy.

accident后偶爾接以that從句。 His absence was due to the accident that the letter asking him to come had gone astray.

有時意為“偶然成功的人或事”，如a political accident指“一個不靠本領(lǐng)而借偶然機會成功的政界人物”。

accident的基本含義是“意外遭遇”,即缺乏主觀動機的不測事件,多用于交通事故。accident一般會造成損傷,其損傷程度的范圍很大,譬如交通事故,可以是機毀人亡,也可以是遍體鱗傷,還可以是僅傷皮毛,當(dāng)然也可以安然無恙。

accident還可以表示事先沒有預(yù)料到的“意外”,即“偶然發(fā)生的事”,可以是好事,也可以是壞事,還可以是無所謂好也無所謂壞的事。

表示“某人遭遇不幸或事故”時接介詞to或with; 表示“某物遭遇不幸或事故”時接to。
