provide作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)，指“規(guī)定”，后可接that從句。值得注意的是從句中要用shall/should，不用will/would，偶爾可用虛擬現(xiàn)在式。 The contract provides that only the best materials shall be used.The contract provides that only the best materials be used.合同規(guī)定說只允許用最好的材料。

provided可作連接詞，原屬于provide的過去分詞， provided ...或provided that ...指“規(guī)定或以……作條件”。當(dāng)用于正式英語中時(shí)，provided .../provided that ...可等同于“if...”。 I will go provided (that) you will go with me.I will go if you will go with me.兩句意思一樣，但注意兩者不能隨便替換。 What will happen if they see us?句中的if不可以替換成provided。不過通常來說，用provided的場合，用if都是可以的。

provide用作及物動(dòng)詞時(shí),可表示“提供,供給,供應(yīng),裝備”,后可接名詞或代詞作簡單賓語; 還可接雙賓語,常用介詞for引出間接賓語,也可用介詞with引出直接賓語,有時(shí)with可省略。

provide還可表示法律、規(guī)章、協(xié)議等的“規(guī)定”,往往作為條件提出使之能按照某人的意愿或某種規(guī)則履行,后常接that引起的從句,從句中可以用shall, should, must, may, ought to等,用should, must, ought to時(shí),語氣較重,用may時(shí),語氣較輕,用shall時(shí),指當(dāng)前,語氣一般,也可用虛擬語氣。

provide用作不及物動(dòng)詞時(shí)常與for, against 等介詞搭配。
