sob作“哭泣；啜泣”解時是不及物動詞；作“哭訴；嗚咽地說”解時是及物動詞，此時賓語后常接副詞out表示“嗚咽地說出某事”，out也可提至賓語前。sob用作及物動詞時，還可引出直接引語。
