best引導(dǎo)的that從句中，should可省略。 It's the best that she （should） listen to the music once again.

best用作形容詞是good的最高級形式,在句中可用作定語或表語。用作定語時,其前通常加定冠詞the; 用作表語時則不用加the。best之前有時不加the而加a,這時表達的意思不同。

best用作表語時,其后可接由that引導(dǎo)的從句,從句中的謂語動詞要用虛擬式。

當best用以修飾定語從句中的先行詞時,則定語從句中的謂語動詞須用完成時態(tài)。

next〔second〕 best表示“第二好的”“稍次的”。例如:Brooks is the next best player in the team.布魯克斯是隊里的第二好手。

best有時可表示原級good后所沒有的特殊意義。例如:I have been waiting for the best part of a day.我已等了幾乎一天了。

best和the best在用作表語時都是正確的，一般說來在意思上沒有區(qū)別。不過 A.S. Hornby認為用the可使意思更直接、更準確。例如：His work is best.是把他的工作與其他人的工作一并考慮；而His work is the best.是把他的工作從所有人的工作中挑選出來。

best用作副詞是well的最高級形式，基本意思是“最好地”,既可修飾動態(tài)動詞,也可修飾靜態(tài)動詞。作“最,最高程度地”解時,與most同義,常與love, like, hate, know, understand等表示心理感情的靜態(tài)動詞連用。

best還常用來構(gòu)成復(fù)合詞。

best用作副詞時,其前一般不加定冠詞。但有時為了加強語氣,也加定冠詞the。例如:I love work the best.我最喜歡干活。

best用作名詞時,既可指“最好的東西”,也可指“最好的人”。用于抽象意義還可指“最重要的方面”“最重要的優(yōu)越性”。

best一般只用于單數(shù)形式,當其作主語時,謂語動詞用單數(shù)。best其前常加定冠詞或物主代詞。

在the best of短語中, of后面的名詞一般用復(fù)數(shù),有時也可用單數(shù)。

best有時還可指“最高紀錄”,在美國口語中還可表示“最良好的祝愿”。例如:

He set a best of 9.9 second.他創(chuàng)造了9.9秒的最高紀錄。Give him my best.請代我向他致意。

a next〔second〕 best表示“第二好〔稍次〕的人〔物〕”。例如:I liked the deluxe edition, but I could afford only a second best.我喜歡精裝版,但我只買得起一本稍次一點的。

better一般用于三者或三者以上的比較。但在口語中甚至在權(quán)威們的作品中,有時可用best代替better用于兩者之間的比較。例如:Which season do you like best, spring or autumn?在春天和秋天兩個季節(jié)中,你更喜歡哪一個?The one down the river is the best of the two.兩者中處于下游的那個最好。但一般認為這是不太嚴謹?shù)挠梅?因此在教學(xué)中最好避免。

best偶爾還可用作及物動詞,意為“打敗”“勝過”。例如:She was bested in a debate.她在辯論中被駁倒。None of the pictures in exhibition could best this one.在展出的畫中,沒有一幅超過這幅。
