這些不定代詞不僅在含義上有單復(fù)數(shù)之分，而且在用法上有泛指(無the)和特指(有the)之別。其用法區(qū)別可歸納如下：
(1) 指單數(shù)：若泛指用
another，若特指用 the
other。如：
Have
another piece of
chocolate. 再吃一塊巧克力糖吧。
Give that wall
another coat of
paint. 給那面墻再刷一層油漆。
He
wants a
transfer to
another job. 他想轉(zhuǎn)換工作。
He
killed the
other man in a
fight. 他在搏斗中殺死了對(duì)手。
The
driver of the
other car was a
woman. 另一輛車的司機(jī)是女的。
This one is
shorter than the
other by
three inches. 這一個(gè)比那一個(gè)短3英寸。
(2) 指復(fù)數(shù)：若泛指用
other(后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞)，若特指用the
other(后接復(fù)數(shù)名詞)。如：
Other boys were
arriving now. 其他男孩馬上也要到了。
Other people have had
similar experiences. 其他人也有相似的經(jīng)歷。
Other businesses cling on and hope. 其他企業(yè)堅(jiān)持著并且抱著希望。
She zigzagged her way
through the
other guests. 她從其他客人中間穿過。
They
bought out all the
other partners. 他們買下了其它合伙人的全部股份。
Sorry about all the
other things I didn’t have time for. 其余部分因時(shí)間不夠沒法講完，只好表示抱歉。
(3)
others的用法：永遠(yuǎn)表示復(fù)數(shù)意義(且其后不能再接名詞)。其用法大致相當(dāng)于“other+復(fù)數(shù)名詞”，同樣地 the
others 大致相當(dāng)于“the
other＋復(fù)數(shù)名詞”。如：
He
stood aloof from all the
others. 他和誰都保持距離。
They look
control of the
business from the
others. 他們從別人手中接管了業(yè)務(wù)。
Some
people ski
worse than
others. 有些人的滑雪技術(shù)就是不如別人。
(4) 與some 對(duì)比：與some 對(duì)比使用時(shí)，用
others(此時(shí)與 some 同義)。如：
Some
people enjoy exercise,
others don’t. 一些人喜歡運(yùn)動(dòng)，而另一些人則不喜歡。
Some
people are
frightened of
thunder,
others of
snakes. 有些人怕雷聲，有些人怕蛇。
Some of our
groups are
static,
others mobile. 我們中間有些小組是固定的，另一些則是流動(dòng)的。
Some
people call that
place the
Persian Gulf,
others the
Arabian Gulf. 有些人稱那個(gè)地方波斯灣，也有些人稱之為阿拉伯灣。
